What is Sciatica?
If you experience a radiating, numbing or throbbing pain sensation in your lower back, legs and buttocks, you may have sciatica. This painful, chronic condition can seriously impact your quality of life. Even more frustrating, some treatment options only “cover up” your pain symptoms, rather than treating the underlying cause. This can lead to frustrating cycles of pain. Chiropractic care is an effective treatment for sciatica pain that puts you back in control of your life. Our non-invasive, drug-free approach targets the root trigger for your pain, providing long-lasting pain relief.
Sciatica is a chronic pain condition that occurs when a herniated disc or bone spur places pressure on the vertebrae, pinching the sciatic nerve. In some rare cases this compression may also be caused by a tumor, which may require surgery to address. In most cases, however, a patient’s pain is due to a herniated disc, which responds positively to chiropractic treatment. Sciatica is characterized by pain that radiates down from the lower back (lumbar spine) through the buttock and legs. This pain is traveling along the length of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica pain can vary widely; some moments it may feel like an electric shock or violent jolt. At other times, this pain may feel like a sharp, persistent burning sensation.
While some cases of mild sciatica may resolve themselves with time, in general, sciatica does not simply “go away” without treatment. As long as the sciatic nerve remains compressed, your pain will continue. Chiropractic care focuses on relieving this compression by bringing proper alignment back to the lumbar spine. Chiropractic adjustments are an effective alternative treatment to medications. Drugs numb your body’s perception of pain, but once these drugs wear off, the pain will return. In contrast, chiropractic adjustments focus on relieving the root cause for your pain. Adjustments bring correct alignment to the spine and alleviate nerve compression, which in turn will relieve pain.
In addition to chiropractic adjustments, many patients also benefit from physical therapy and corrective exercises. As the acute pain lessens over time thanks to adjustments, physical therapy exercises are a natural complement to chiropractic care. These exercises support proper posture by strengthening the core muscles that support the back and improving flexibility.
Sciatica is a common cause for back pain in adults between the ages of 30 and 50, although individuals of all ages may be affected by this pain condition. While an accidental injury may be the cause, for many patients, sciatica is simply the result of natural wear and tear over time. Chiropractic care is a whole body approach to sciatica pain relief that addresses both the root pain trigger while also helping to reduce the risk for future pain. Our comprehensive chiropractic care programs are designed to enhance all aspects of a patient’s well being and support long-term wellness.
